18mar7:30 pm- 9:30 pm'Hypochondria and other madenesses' by ThoroughbassA musical performance at UON Conservatorium

Event Details

Thoroughbass is honoured to welcome Michael Tsalka, internationally recognised keyboard player, whose reputation as a brilliant musician and promoter of new music in Europe, Asia and South America is well-known. He starts his annual global tour by joining us for some exciting music for two harpsichords. Together with The Sydney Consort’s Monika Kornel, we are delighted to have him as our guest.

Hypochondria – a state of imagined illness, a form of anxiety, madness in music. From music as diverse as Purcell’s Mad Bess and Zelenka’s Hypocondrie to a thousand operatic ‘mad’ scenes composers have long explored the dramatic qualities of madness. Pursuing the mad metaphor we explore the unusual, not to say weird world of the fantastical harpsichord.

Foot-stamping Spanish flavours, ecstatic Australian bird-calls, French pomposity, childhood fantasies and Italian drama are all in the mad mix revealed in selected works by Handel, Soler, Zelenka, Couperin, Vivaldi, Kats-Chernin, Ann Carr-Boyd and others.
