The Friends of the University of Newcastle 2014 Acquisitive Art Prizes and Art Fair
Best known for their popular biennial Book Fair at the University Great Hall, the Friends of the University of Newcastle are a dedicated group committed to the development of scholarships and the support of students that attend the University of Newcastle across all its campuses. Since they founded in 1981, the Friends have raised nearly $1,000,000 and contributed to the life of the University community through building works, substantial cultural gifts such as the Newcastle Tapestry and reconditioning the Great Hall organ, funding the University’s award-winning choirs, along with many student grants and scholarships.
Their second biennial Art Fair starts on 23 July 2014, and this year they are sponsoring three generous Acquisitive Art Prizes: a $6,000 Open Prize and two Student Prizes of $2,500 each. These prizes offer a substantial opportunity for both established artists and students alike to become part of the University of Newcastle’s Art Collection – a public collection of real significance for the Hunter region.
The inaugural Art Fair sale in 2012 was a tremendous success with over 150 artworks on offer. Again this year, it will represent a real opportunity to buy work from significant artists at affordable prices. Favourites from the best of contemporary Australian art, with a focus on the work of leading local artists, will be on exhibition, along with a number of Aboriginal artworks from the Central Desert.
The money raised from the Art Fair sales supports the Acquisitive Art Prizes and the Friends of the University Margaret Olley Postgraduate Scholarship, and assists the Friends of the University of Newcastle in their ongoing support of students and the wellbeing and vibrancy of the entire University community.
