Launched in 2011, Do Something Near You is an online community directory and volunteer portal. Its aim is to make it easier for people to locate and volunteer with community groups and services within their local area.
The directory is easily accessible online. All potential volunteers need to do is enter their postcode to find all the registered community organisations in their local area that are looking for supporters and volunteers. People with a specific interest in mind can also search the register by keyword or browse a diverse list of interests including hospitals, aged care, youth work, environmental organisations and social groups.
576 different communities around Australia are taking part in Do Something Near You, which promotes charity stores and helplines, community events and local associations like Scouts and Lions Clubs.
Many of Australia’s biggest community groups are already listed, and Do Something! is calling for all local community groups to register for free to become part of the directory. Any not for profit community organisations that are looking for community and volunteer involvement can register.
Supported by Aldi, the Do Something Near You website is an initiative of not-for-profit organisation Do Something! Established in June 1991 by Planet Ark founders John Dee and Pat Cash in association with Tina Jackson, former Executive Director of the National Trust of Australia, Do Something! seeks to build alliances between businesses, government and the community.
The Do Something Near You project encourages and assists members of the public and the business community to invest their time and resources in local not-for-profit organisations, to the benefit of all Australians.
