Creative writing PhD student awarded Australia Council Grant

University of Newcastle Creative Writing Research Higher Degree student Ryan O’Neill has been awarded a $40,000 New Work (Emerging Writers) grant in the latest round of Australia Council grants.

This grant is designed to assist in the creation of new work by published Australian writers.

Ryan said he will use this grant to write a new short story collection. His last collection, The Weight of a Human Heart, was published in the UK, US and Australia and was shortlisted for a number of awards as well as inclusion in Best Australian Stories 2013.

Two of the Faculty of Education and Arts academics, Associate Professor Kim Cheng Boey and Dr David Musgrave, also have poems in this year’s Best Australian Poems.
