Based on the findings from research conducted with first in family students across the University of Wollongong, the University of Newcastle and Open Universities Australia, Breaking the Barriers is a forum on supporting and engaging these university learners and their families.
The project interviewed and surveyed both students and their families to explore how institutions might implement targeted support strategies that account for the learning contexts of this cohort, respond more effectively to student diversity and explore strategies for connecting with families and community of first-in-family/mature learners.
At the Breaking the Barriers forum, key findings from the project will be shared, as well as the resources developed. The forum will include presentations from first in family students who are studying in online and face to face modes as well as insights into the specifics of students studying at an enabling, pre-degree and also undergraduate level.
It is recommended that anyone involved in teaching or supporting students who are first in family to attend university consider attending the forum – including teaching practitioners, support staff and professional staff.
The forum is free to attend.
