Backyard Bus Artist in Residence

Artists ready to get behind the wheel of the Backyard Bus

Social enterprise Emerald Violin’s Backyard Bus program began last month, with the first of four artists taking residency in the bus from 19 September.

A key feature of the residency is the requirement for all artists to make a tangible contribution to the local community by devising and facilitating a community engagement activity such as a lecture, workshop, performance or master class.

The first artist to take up residency in the bus, Luke Jaaniste, is a sound artist, installation artist, writer and philosopher with a PhD in music. His work is currently focussed on combining sounds, space, bodies and ideas in various permutations. Luke is passionate about participatory based approaches to creative work and his work has appeared at Australian and international festivals.

Award winning playwright and co-creative director of the independent theatre company RealTV, Angela Betzien, will be in Newcastle in October. Angela’s work is built on a platform of social justice with a strong desire to tell stories of those without a voice, primarily children and young people. Her work can be found online at her website.

Linda Wilken is a practising visual artist who is currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts by research and studio work at the University of Sydney. Linda’s current topic of investigation is the sexualisation and objectification of young girls within contemporary western cultures. Linda will be in Newcastle from 4 November.

Amaranta Nehru will be the final artist in the bus for 2013, taking up residency from 1 December. Amaranta is an animator, illustrator and graphic designer from India, who is passionate about art as a healing and political tool.
