2014 Human Rights and Social Justice Lecture

With 2014 marking the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the impending release of the report on Children in Immigration Centres, this year’s Human Rights and Social Justice Lecture at the University of Newcastle will focus on the rights of children and will be delivered by Professor Gillian Triggs.

Professor Triggs is the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission. She has an extensive background in law with previous roles including Dean of the Faculty of Law and Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney, Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, and a former Barrister.

In her Presidency, Professor Triggs is committed to implementing Australian law of the human rights treaties to which Australia is a party and working with nations in the Asia Pacific region on practical approaches to human rights.

Her influence adds to the Commission’s efforts to inform Australians, especially children, about their fundamental human rights.

The Human Rights and Social Justice Lecture is an initiative of UON’s  Equity and Diversity Unit.
